Annette Nemethova, our Group Sustainability Lead, recently attended the Motor Transport Decarbonisation Summit as a guest speaker. We asked her more about the event, including what her key takeaways were.

First, could you tell us about the event?

The Decarbonisation Summit is designed to support the transport sector in the transition to a low carbon future. It is attended by stakeholders across the industry to review progress, share best practice, showcase the latest innovations, and discuss the roadmap for success.

You were invited to speak at the Summit, what did you cover?

At Gregory Group we have made good progress towards our goal of being net zero by 2038. During 2025 we have achieved a lot, including being part of a decarbonisation consortium, running 16% of all the miles we travel on low carbon fuels, and being the first transport operator to be approved under RFAS Fleet, enabling us to issue RFAS declarations that evidence the emission reductions achieved by using low carbon fuels. I shared our journey with the audience, including some of the things we learnt along the way.

What are those key learnings?

The most valuable insights come from learning through your own operations. The journey isn’t about making one big decision: it’s about phasing, adapting, and evolving.

What key takeaways did you gather from attending the Summit?

The transport industry is progressing more than it realises. I attended the event last year and there was a noticeable shift this year.

Decarbonisation and electrification feel more achievable with operators really starting to embrace change. There were many more examples of decarbonisation being put into practice and confidence is definitely growing.

What apprehensions did you witness?

The biggest concerns were the cost involved, the uncertainty around timelines, and the fear of getting it wrong. Operators are worried about making the wrong investment, especially with emerging technologies and limited historical data to guide decisions.

What advice would you give to others in the transport sector who are embarking on their sustainability strategy?

Decarbonisation isn’t a single leap; it’s a series of steps. Start small, trial different solutions, and phase your approach.

While it’s important to research the market and learn from others, all our businesses are unique, so it’s only when you get your decarbonisation strategy underway that you will build your own expertise.

No one has all the answers, so get started, share your journey, and collaborate with others.
