Local Twynholm man Jimmy McCulloch penned this personal tribute to Jimmy Coulthard.
Reports suggest that Jimmy Coulthard took few holidays during his lifetime, but in 1949, with his health suffering after losing a son, he flew to Canada to join his wife who had departed days earlier. Before Jimmy left, his friend Jimmy McCulloch penned the following tribute, which was read out at a leaving dinner in his honour.
Supreme in Gallowa'
Just sit up in your chairs awhile and listen to my craic.
I'll tell you a fine story about Jim Coulthard at the back.
He is a thorough sportsman on that I need not dwell.
It's known all over Scotland and England just as well.
I've known him since he was a lad and I can guarantee,
There's not a man in Gallowa' could make him bow to the knee.
He'll tell you with well chose words exactly what he'll think.
And if an argument you want you'll find he's no sma' drink.
He has built a splendid business; it's super you'll agree.
His garage is the finest along the Banks O' Dee'.
His drivers they are proud of him, he's always at their call.
And many of his trials a-pleasing of them all.
The children in the village remember him so fine,
For parties in the village hall or else a pantomime.
Burns talks about his Stirling oss, and Fangio say braw,
But give me Jimmy Coulthard 'supreme in Gallowa'
When scarcley seventeen years of age and this is not invented,
He drove a car to John O' Groats and drove back quite contented.
I wish him all the best of luck, his wife and family too.
I hope his holiday abroad, his good health will renew.
Now 'll give o'er and say no more and 'till the day I dee
I'll aye remember with respect The Coulthard family.
